au printemps

that’s french for in the

(soon to be listed here)

finally spring is slowly but surely making its way to cheeseland.  when i was in dc last weekend, it was such a treat to see everything in bloom!  i love this time of year because that means my GARDEN reawakens after a long, long winter’s slumber.

besides creating art & antiquing/junking, GARDENING is another heartfelt passion of mine. i cannot wait to get in my garden & create new life there! 🙂  there’s something about tending a garden & wanting to grow your own flowers, herbs & vegetables.  it gives one a sense of accomplishment, self-reliance & pride. i love that about gardening.

when i was in chi-town before i returned to cheeseland the other day, i stopped by borders.  i came across some interesting books.  one was by corey moortgat, the art of personal imagery.  i didn’t buy the book, tho i wanted to.  i liked that she used her personal images in her artwork.  that is something that i would like to do more of, instead of using those ubiquitous vintage people imagery (which i have written about elsewhere).  i think a good place to start would be to use that moleskine lia had given me.  soon…but for right now, i have quite a few arty wips that i must attend to by month’s end.

the other book that caught my eye was this one

by rice freeman-zachery.  there was a lot of “eye candy” type books in the craftbook section at borders.  but this particular book grabbed my attention because it had more “depth”.  i’ve only started reading this book, but so far i am glad that i bought it.  it really discusses the meaning of “creativity” & why & what drives people to actively seek  & fervently pursue & engage in creating art.  it’s got a philosphical bent that pretty much hooked me.  it’s thought-provoking, if nothing else.  creating art is WORK.  not just idle, goof-off time.  but honest to goodness WORK.

speaking of which, i got to work on this marie-themed wip.  it’s for tiffani (sorry, i cannot think of her blog url at the moment) for jaime’s marie cake box swap (also her blog’s url eludes me.  but she is aka stink bone jones on flickr). i essentially took one of those prettily-covered chipboard suitcases that you see everywhere & altered it. i found this little girl’s headband & embellished it with stuff i had in the studio to form a crown.    the l’amour tag was given to me by my dear bloggy pal, alice.  i thought it went with the look i was aiming for.   i also used leftover sparkly pipe cleaner & fashioned the letter “m”…for marie, but of course! i used a suitcase to fashion un gateau a la marie for my partner because i thought it would serve a dual purpose>>>a faux gateau AND a container all in one! 🙂

inside the petite valise, i filled it with some lovely pretties that la reine herself might have enjoyed! they are not pictured because i want it to be a surprise for tiffani.

the other day, my sis & i came across this cool new group on flickr.  it’s a place to show off all your “marie bling”…check it out!  how fun, i think i will add some of the above pix in the group…

since we are on the topic of marie, next week the hubby & i will be heading up north for the weekend. a nice getaway for him & a fab artful weekend for moi, hehehe!  i will be going to catherine moore’s altered art workshops at the assemblage studio & i CANNOT WAIT!!!  i’m gathering my art supplies for what i am sure is going to be an incredible time.  🙂

it’s a school nite & i need to get ready for bed.  until next time, bonne nuit! xoxo mary ann
